Denmark hosts mini-summit of European aid agengies to support 'Bottom Up' development A two-day meeting starts today in Copenhagen, hosted by the Royal Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and organised by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), to bring together government aid agencies from across Europe. Officials from Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the host country will talk through future strategies for addressing the ever increasing environmental challenges - climate change, growing cities, international trade and pressure on natural resources - and meeting the needs and aspirations of poor people around the world. IIED, an international organisation based in London, works in Asia, Africa and Latin America alongside grassroots organizations and local communities to reduce poverty and manage resources - such as land, forests and water - sustainably and fairly, and to mitigate, and adjust to the effects of, climate change. The Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been working with IIED for more than 20 years, supporting a number of ground-breaking projects that address global inequality and sustainability. "Making Decentralisation Work" is one such example. This is a project in West Africa that has been designing innovative tools and methods to allow more marginalized citizens - women and pastoralists in particular - to play an effective role in decisions that affect their lives. All the donors represented at the meeting fund IIED activities which strengthen the rights and priorities of local people.
