Jan Pronk to be new chair of IIEDNovember 15, 2002 (London,UK) -- The Board of Trustees of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is pleased to announce the appointment of Jan Pronk as Chair, effective November 18, 2002. Mr. Pronk was recently UN Secretary General Kofi Annan’s Special Envoy for the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development. He was Minister of Environment (1998-2002) and previously Minister of Development Cooperation (1973-77; 1989-1998) for the Government of The Netherlands, He succeeds Derek Osborn who has been Chair since 1999 and remains on the Board as Vice-Chair. “I am delighted to head the Board of IIED which has a global reputation for integrity and excellence as a pioneering international policy research institute in the field of sustainable development”, said Mr. Pronk. “This Institute has thrived for more than 30 years in cutting-edge policy and action research and played a leading role at the Johannesburg Earth Summit. Its vision for the future will be of critical importance to the United Nations, governments and civil society around the world.” “IIED is well-placed to respond to the challenges posed by WSSD and the Institute looks forward to the leadership Jan Pronk can provide as IIED’s Chair”, said Dr. Nigel Cross, Executive Director of IIED. Brief Bio of Jan Pronk Jan Pronk was a member of the Lower House of Parliament for the Labour Party (PvdA) from 1971 to 1973; 1978 to 1980; and 1986 to 1989. From 1973 to 1977, he was Minister for Development Cooperation. From 1980 to 1985 Jan Pronk was Deputy Secretary-General of United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and from 1985 to1986 Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations. He was first Deputy Chairman of the Labour Party from 1986 to 1989. Again appointed Minister for Development Cooperation in 1989, Jan Pronk undertook the portfolio a third time in 1994. In 1998 he was appointed Minister of the Environment, a position he held until August 2002. He was President of the Conference of the Parties (COP 6) for the UN Climate Change negotiations in 2000 (The Hague) and 2001 (Bonn). He was UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Envoy for the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development.
