Social Justice in Environment and Development High on the Agenda in Accra this weekend...
Audio Clips (mp3 format): Introduction from Dr Nii Ashie Kotey Opening remarks from James Mayers The meeting will be opened by Dr Nii Ashie Kotey, the Dean of the Law Faculty at the University of Ghana and Dr Camilla Toulmin, Director of IIED. Participants from a wide range of different organisations and countries will be attending. NGOs, the private sector, government agencies and intergovernmental organisations are coming from all over the world. African colleagues will also be travelling from South Africa, Malawi, Senegal and Mali. Here in Ghana, IIED has strong links with Civic Response, who are the convenors of the IIED’s Forest Governance Learning Group in Ghana. “We are delighted to be co-hosting this meeting with IIED and look forward to a stimulating exchange of views and ideas between participants” says Kyeretwie Opoku, Coordinator, of Civic Response. The meeting is intended to bring people together to discuss and challenge ideas for the different activities planned for the Institute’s work on natural resource management. James Mayers, Head of the Natural Resource Group at IIED is anxious to use this event to inform his group’s future thinking “our colleagues and friends from Africa, and Ghana in particular, bring strong insights and experience to our work in this region - this is an invaluable opportunity to keep us rooted in reality and to provide a critical focus in how to inform policy change” The two day meeting will be exploring ideas and issues about ecosystem resilience, small producers and local economies as well as about institutions governance and power in the access and use of natural resources Notes to editors Participants of the Conference are available for interview over 4,5 & 6 May.
