Dr Camilla Toulmin appointed Director of IIED

February 03, 2004 (London, UK) -- The Board of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Camilla Toulmin to the position of Director of IIED, following an open recruitment process.

Commenting on the appointment, Jan Pronk, Chair of the Board, said:

“Camilla Toulmin has played a central role in furthering the mission and vision of IIED for the last 16 years and has now been afforded the ultimate responsibility - to lead the Institute in meeting the challenges of sustainable development in the 21st century. She is admirably suited to this new role. IIED occupies a unique niche in the world, combining analysis of both environment and development issues at the local, national, regional and global levels. Dr. Toulmin is familiar with policy-making at the highest levels, and with the day-to-day struggles of marginalised peoples and groups. She has the strategic vision, integrity and authority to take the work of the Institute forward in all of these areas and to realise its goals and values.”

On accepting the position, Camilla said:

“I feel honoured, delighted and immensely privileged to be asked to lead IIED. It will be both exciting and challenging to take our work forward and build further on our ways of working, with many organisations south and north. The current global climate presents hard challenges, with the emphasis on security issues pulling resources and attention away from fundamental issues of poverty, power, environmental change and governance. Within this context, we seek to make the world a fairer and more sustainable place, in alliance with like-minded partners. In turning this vision into a reality, I expect to focus on several areas, including ways to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, strengthening our partnerships, maintaining creative and independent thinking and getting our message across in a very competitive information environment.”
