Strategy Document
View PDF (1.15MB)
This document lays out how our works promotes more sustainable patterns of development at local, national and global levels. Our strategy document maps out our priorities, experience and approach, and how they shape the way we work. It provides a strong focus on the challenges we face while being firmly grounded in the world today.

What makes us different?

IIED works with many different people and organisations from around the world - from smallholder farmers and big city slum dwellers, to international organisations, corporate actors and global citizen networks. Our long term partnerships with many groups provide the basis for getting the voices of poorer, marginalised people heard by key actors in governments and global institutions.

What are the challenges?

IIED has identified 5 major goals we want to achieve over the next 5 years:

  • Achieving a robust, ambitious and equitable deal for the post 2012 Kyoto agreement on addressing climate change
  • Bringing investment in and management of environment centre-stage in policy, practice, aid architecture and delivery of the MDGs
  • Strengthening local rights to land and natural resources, and improving local governance so land is used fairly and sustainably
  • Improving water and sanitation provision, and helping urban poor groups to strengthen their housing security
  • Re-designing markets to bring benefits for poverty reduction, environmental protection and sustainable livelihoods

The credibility and experience we have built up over time provide support for the work we do on behalf of our partners. We aim to challenge development policy and practice so that it addresses environmental concerns and responds better to the needs of the most vulnerable. We continue to build on the partnerships and alliances that form the foundation of our work and are constantly developing ways to monitor and evaluate our work to ensure greater effectiveness.
