Sustainable Development Impacts of Trade

We are currently working on the following projects in this thematic area:

There is a need for better understanding of the linkages between trade liberalisation and sustainable development and of the measures that can be taken to minimise its negative impacts and enhance its positive impacts.   This research aims to fill this gap, and to inform negotiations on this issue at the WTO and subsequently in regional processes.

The focus of this research is on natural resource sectors, However, lessons from analysis of other sectors will also be considered.

We propose to review existing methodological approaches, and to develop a methodology drawing on the strengths and weaknesses of existing approaches and piloting in case studies of natural resource sectors.

A background paper is currently being prepared reviewing the initiatives and research reports assessing the impact of trade liberalisation policy on sustainable development, both ex post and ex ante. The review will cover both structured initiatives such as the UNEP’s Integrated Assessment approach and the EU’s Sustainability Impact Assessment methodology as well as stand alone country case studies and cross-country analysis.   The background paper will examine the scope, methodology, main strengths and weaknesses of the various studies.

Funding provided by Danida.
