Corporate Roles

There has been a flurry of activity in recent years by industry players, local and national governments, NGOs, and international and UN agencies, all geared towards encouraging a stronger show of corporate citizenship by tourism businesses. For example, numerous tourism certification and ecolabelling schemes have been developed and a feasibility study has been conducted to investigate the establishment of a Sustainable Tourism Stewardship Council; the UNEP Tour Operators Initiative (TOI) has partnered with the Global Reporting Initiative to develop a set of tour operator specific indicators; the World Travel and Tourism Council has produced a report on Corporate Social Responsibility and numerous tour operators and professional associations have developed responsible tourism policies or guidelines. Numerous NGOS and academics are pushing new and innovative ways in which tour operators can positively influence sustainable development goals, and exciting new initiatives are constantly being proposed.

IIED's work is currently focussing on two areas: Standards and Certification, and Corporate-Community Partnerships.
