Theme: Supporting Sustainable Development Decision-Making

Project name: Reduced Impact Logging Feasibility Study (Guyana)

Dates/Duration:

Project Purpose

The project will examine the costs and benefits associated with the use of RIL techniques as compared with conventional logging.

Focus

The analysis will encompass both financial costs and benefits as well as valuation of selected environmental externalities. Economic issues such as potential impact of the use of RIL on government revenue and the implications of different government forest revenue systems and incentive schemes will also be addressed. Trials of conventional logging and RIL are being carried out on three 100 ha blocks Field data is being collected on the labour, machine and material inputs required at each stage of logging from pre-harvest planning to road transport. This will form the basis of the financial analysis. Biophysical assessments focusing on carbon and non-timber forest products are also being carried out. IIED is providing inputs on the financial analysis and is leading on the policy and incentive issues and the valuation of environmental externalities.
