Theme: Supporting Sustainable Development Decision-Making

Project name: Sustainable Financing of Natural Resource Management

Dates/Duration: 2002-2004

Project purpose

The project aims to provide practical guidance to development practitioners and donor agencies on how to ensure sustainable financing for environmental projects.

Focus

In collaboration with WWF–MPO Maryanne Grieg-Gran conducted a survey of best practice in sustainable financing of natural resource management. Guidelines for development practitioners and donor agencies were drawn up, based on recent on-the-ground experiences and literature concerning sustainable financing in the context of poverty reduction and conservation of biodiversity.

Progress to date

EEP produced in-depth discussions of Markets for Environmental Services and Corporate Community Partnerships, drawing on work previously carried out on partnerships for wildlife tourism and a study on partnerships in the forestry sector, prepared by IIED’s Forestry and Land Use programme.

In addition, Maryanne Grieg-Gran prepared a case study on the ICMS Ecologico in Brazil, drawing on work carried out by IIED in conjunction with WWF Brazil.

This work is featured in the WWF-MPO publication From Goodwil to Payments for Environmental Services. A survey of financining options for sustainable natural resource management in developing coutnries, edited by Pablo Gutman.
