The list of organisations below should not be considered as exhaustive: ACFED undertakes activities on the management of natural resources and on combating desertification with a strategy based on the participatory development approach. It conducts research on women and desertification, holds national workshops on women and their role in the national action plan. ACFED supports and advises community-based organisations on combating desertification and promoting sustainable development. Contact: acfed@fasonet.bf ARED is an NGO which specialises in education and community development in African languages, with a special focus on the Pulaar languages. Over the last few years, ARED has been developing a wider programme of work which focuses on linking adult education and literacy training to issues of self-determination, good governance and local capacity building for natural resource management within the context of decentralisation. All their materials are developed and prepared in Pulaar, a language spoken by roughly 25 million people across the Sahel from Senegal in the west to Sudan in the east. Their tools and training modules are especially tailored and tested for work at community level, taking into account the information and skill level of community participants who may be newly literate in Pulaar, or not literate in any language. It aims to foster pastoral development by enhancing the skills of pastoral organisations, offering mediation expertise in conflict resolution between herders and farmers, and providing policy advice at national and international levels. The Centre undertakes research and collaborative policy development in a number of fields both in Scotland and overseas. It has a particularly active programme on land issues and common property rights.

The CMA.AOC (Conférence des Ministres de l’Agriculture d’Afrique de l’Ouest et du Centre) was created in 1991 in Dakar. It is composed of the Ministers for Agriculture and/or Livestock of 20 member countries in West and Central Africa. It aims (i) to promote inter-sub-regional exchanges with a view to creating a truly regional market for agricultural products, (ii) to boost the competitive edge of regional products sold on international markets and (iii) to strengthen the capacities of bodies involved in the formulation, implementation and assessment of agricultural policies. GIDIS is a research institute which also carries out teaching and training. Created in 1998, GRAF is a research network focusing on land rights and land policy in Burkina Faso. It is the West African regional coordinator of a network on land tenure issues in Africa (LandNet). GRAF’s main objectives are the following:
The main activities undertaken by GRAF include editing a regular bulletin to share information on land issues and research; supporting young researchers in carrying out research and publication; preparation of a bibliographical database on land issues and creating a web site. GRAF organises international meetings on land issues, publishes papers on land issues and is developing closer links with international research teams working on similar themes. GRAF is co-ordinating in Burkina Faso our programme - Making Decentralisation Work.
GRET is a non-governmental organisation, working on research and development policy and practice in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Its main activities include implementing economic and social development projects in urban and rural areas, expertise and advisory work, as well as research activities. It has a particular interest in working at the interface of research and development, on ways to promote technical and institutional innovation. The nvironment and Rural Development team has built up much experience in the analysis of smallholder farmers strategies and the challenges facing them. GRET has been working on land tenure issues and the management of renewable natural resources in Latin America (Brazil, Costa Rica), South East Asia (Cambodia, Vietnam), the Indian Ocean (Comores) and Africa.
The Institute of African Studies was established in 1961 as a semi- utonomous institute of the University of Ghana. It undertakes fundamental and applied research in all aspects of the social studies and humanities in Africa, and the dissemination of research.
IDS is one of the foremost teaching and research organisations working on development issues, in the UK. The institute has a strong focus on rural poverty and anagement of natural resources in the developing world. Its purpose is to inform development policy and practice at all levels. The IDS Environment Group, has worked extensively in Southern and Eastern Africa, and is currently managing a range of research programmes in collaboration with African research partners. A wide range of disciplines is represented, including economics, sociology, anthropology, political science, geography and ecology.
International Development Studies (IDS) is a research and teaching department of the Roskilde University in Copenhagen (RUC). The overall aim of the research is to explore issues related to political, economic and cultural institutions in development from an interdisciplinary angle. IDS-RUC has 15 permanent scientific staff members and has participated in a large number of collaborative research efforts. These include the SEREIN (The Soudano-Sahel Research Initiative) programme which has conducted interdisciplinary research to investigate natural resources management and local politics in Burkina Faso.
The IRD (formerly ORSTOM) has a long tradition of research on land tenure systems and the dynamics of land use and natural resource rights, often using an interdisciplinary approach (agronomy, geography, sociology, economics). IRD specialises in detailed field research with a special emphasis on land tenure dynamics and institutional arrangements, and the place of political action and stakeholder strategies in l
KIT is a research, training and development oriented institute. The multi-disciplinary organisational structure of KIT facilitates integrated deployment of experience and expertise in the domain of integrated natural resource management, Farming Systems Research and Development, management of research and extension services and policy development. The department of Agriculture and Enterprise Development (AED) is specifically dealing with information, generation and dissemination of agricultural knowledge. Core activities are: (i) research and development on sustainable livelihoods, including assistance in methodology development, management and organisation and (ii) community knowledge and innovation management, including advice, facilitation and training. The AED has long term experience in implementing research and development projects in French- and English-speaking Africa.
LEI-DLO is an independent expert organisation working on agricultural economic research, production, processing, trade and distribution as well as economic, social and environmental policies. LEI-DLO contributes to the strengthening of institutional and personal capacity of agricultural economic research in developing countries. LEI-DLO has extensive experience in socio-economic aspects of the development of sustainable farming systems in Africa and Asia at farm household as well as national policy level. NEF is a local NGO based in Douentza Circle, Mopti Region. It has been operative since 1984 with a broad portfolio of activities including natural resource management, civic education through its rural radio (Dande Douentza), literacy, credit and cereal banks. In 1994, NEF set up the Kelka Forest Management project and works in collaboration with the Department of Water and Forests. The project provides institutional and technical support to a supra-village committee representing 15 villages on the edge of the Kelka forest. Conflict between resident agricultural and agro-pastoral communities and transhumant herders reliant on the forest for their livelihoods has precipitated a recognition among project staff and the local residents to involve seasonal pastoralists in the development of strategies for woodland management. Noragric was established in 1986 as the Centre for international development and institutional collaboration at the Agricultural University of Norway. Noragric is a multi- and inter-disciplinary environment with a staff of about 40 professionals from 11 nations. The staff are carrying out research and consultancies in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe. In addition the Centre is running an MSc-programme in Management of Natural Resources and Sustainable Agriculture and a PhD-programme in Development Studies. One of the main areas of work of Noragric staff is on institutions and policy analysis focusing on the management of natural resources with an emphasis on institutional continuity and change, resource access and property rights. The main geographical focus of Noragric has so far been drylands and coastal zones.
The Natural Resources Institute carries out research and development and training to promote efficient management and use of renewable natural resources in support of sustainable livelihoods. NRI has been working with DFID and other partners on questions of land policy research and development.
The Programme for Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) is a constituent unit of the University of the Western Cape’s School of Government, and was initiated in 1995. It focuses on research, policy support, post-graduate teaching, training and advisory work and evaluation services in relation to land and agrarian reform and rural development. Specific focus areas to date have been: land restitution, tenure reform and redistribution programmes; community based natural resource management; rural livelihoods and production systems; processes of institutional restructuring and re-orientation in the rural development sector.
The Resource Conflict Institute (RECONCILE) is a policy research NGO based in Nakuru, Kenya. The Institute conducts environmental and natural resources policy and law research, undertakes public interest environmental and natural resources litigation, and advocates for the design of policies and laws that empower resource dependent communities to manage the natural resources on which they depend for their livelihoods. The work of the Institute is informed by the following four objectives:
RECONCILE has positioned itself to play an active role in ensuring that communities are able to benefit from the provisions of new legislation and to influence the enforcement of laws for environmental and natural resources governance. Its networking and advocacy programme seeks to establish a broad alliance from which to launch and develop the other programme components. RECONCILE has been instrumental in the creation of the Kenya Land Alliance as a consortium of NGOs and public and private sector individuals, who are keen to see the reform of land policy in Kenya to facilitate livelihoods. The Institute is the secretariat of the Alliance, promoting dialogue and discourse on the reform of land policy and law. RECONCILE is also working with the Drylands Programme to implement the Pastoral Civil Society in East Africa programme. The GDRN5 network is an informal coalition of 22 organisations involved in NRM activities in the Region of Mopti. Set up in 1994 by CARE, NEF and SOS Sahel, it initially provided a regional platform for the broader dissemination of its members’ experience on NRM issues. Over the last few years it has provided training on improved NRM practices, the implications of decentralisation and legislative reforms on local natural resource management, and is playing an increasingly active role in lobbying regional and national decision makers on NRM issues (e.g. the implications of the new forestry code, decentralisation laws, etc.). Roskilde University is a state university founded in 1972 with the objective of providing research and education in the fields of natural science, social science and the humanities.
The Sahel and West Africa Club is a forum for informal exchange and brainstorming between partners from the North and the South, both public and private. Its main purpose is to increase the impact of development aid. Its Secretariat is located in the Organisation for Economic Development and Co-operation (OECD) but it also counts on its partnerships with institutions and groups of actors in the South such as the CILSS , based in Ouagadougou, the Municipal Development Programme in Cotonou (associating the region's mayors), the West African Enterprise Network, based in Accra (comprising business people from eleven countries in the region), and farmers' organisations. SOS Sahel works to improve the livelihoods of people living in poverty in the Sahel region of Africa, particularly through enabling them to manage better the natural environment in which they live. Contact: mail@Sahel.org.uk In Niger, SOS Sahel aims to promote decentralised management as one of the most effective methods of facilitating real, long-term development through a programme focus on four key areas: (i) supporting processes leading to decentralised management of natural resources; (ii) promoting participatory development processes; (iii) promoting the representation of marginalised groups in the decision-making process; (iv) promoting collaboration and negotiation as permanent and essential elements in the management of natural resources in the Sahel. In Mali, SOS Sahel works in the Bankass area of the Mopti region on the Projet d’Appui à la Gestion de l’Environnement amongst other initiatives. This project has been operational since 1991 working in collaboration with the Department of Water and Forests as well as customary Dogon institutions traditionally responsible for NRM. The project covers a wide range of activities including village water supply, soil and water conservation, literacy, women’s credit, participatory on-farm research and environment education through the Bankass rural radio station, Radio Seno. These activities support the institutional and socio-economic development of the local community through participatory NRM strategies. Contact: SOS-Sahel@spider.toolnet.org In Ethiopia, SOS Sahel-Ethiopia together with the Farmers’ Research Project of FARM Africa have been working in North Omo, southern Ethiopia for a number of years. During this time they have worked with a range of government organisations, NGOs and farmer groups in a series of diagnostic studies, on-farm trials and other development interventions. Following identification by farmers of soil fertility as a major constraint to their production systems, work in north Omo has focused on soil fertility management, leading to documentation on soil fertility issues and the initiation of farmer-led trials on this theme.
