Ecológico
The purpose of this project, which will run from 2003 – 2006, is to monitor
the biodiversity and socio-economic impact of the ICMS Ecológico in Brazil.
The ICMS Ecológico is a fiscal incentive for biodiversity conservation
whereby municipal governments are compensated for the restrictions on land use
from the designation of protected areas. The project aims to develop and test
pilot monitoring systems in two states of Brazil (most probably Mato Grosso and
Pernambuco). It builds on an earlier review of the ICMS Ecológico
which examines the effectiveness of the scheme and provides recommendations
for improvement. See ‘Fiscal
Incentives for Biodiversity Conservation: The ICMS Ecológico in Brazil’
