As part pf its review of experience and practice in sustainability appraisal, SPA has engaged in consultations with potentially interested partners around the world. There is considerable interest to explore further how sustainability appraisal might be applied in practice. Objectives: This programme will aim to establish an international partnership to: further explore the experience with using SA approaches by different sectors (government, private sector, NGOs, academia, etc); debate the opportunities and challenges to the more effective application of SA; and subsequently to develop and test improved approaches. Feedback suggests that this work might best be organised in a modular manner with a series of linked projects being undertaken along geographic and/or ‘interest group’ lines. Wherever possible, these activities build on existing initiatives to engage partners, maximise support and gain potential ‘buy-in’ to outcomes. Organised along such modular lines, the project would have a generic or global spine comprising a comparative review of the work being undertaken internationally through the various modules. This part would be led by IIED together with a number of ‘core partners, building on a preliminary survey currently being completed by IIED. Other regional and sector activities will need to be worked out by discussion with potential partners, according to their interests, priorities and needs, and then plans and budgets developed and funding sought. These activities are likely to vary in approach, content, scope and duration, etc., but all would be seen as modules under the broad framework of the project. IIED will provide administrative and technical coordination. Key findings/progress to date: A proposal to develop a sustainability appraisal framework for southern Africa has been developed jointly by IIED and the Southern Africa Institute for Environmental Assessment (SAIEA) - see our project 'Sustainability appraisal framework for southern Africa' . Workshops have been organised with potential partners in Australia and New Zealand to examine how modules to investigate the application sustainability appraisal in those countries can be taken forward.
