Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development FIELD was founded in London in 1989 by a small group of international lawyers. The result is a vibrant and thriving organisation whose advice and assistance are sought by governments, inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations world-wide. From 1 April 2005, FIELD became a working subsidiary of IIED. While continuing to operate as FIELD, the organisation ids building close links with a range of research activites at IIED, including climate change, trade and investment and biodiversity. The partnership will promote further synergies and cross-fertilisation of work, and both strengthen and add to the existing portfolios of each organisation. Camilla Toulmin, Director of IIED said: “We greatly welcome this opportunity to build together on our combined activities and feel this merger has great potential for strengthening our capacity jointly to address the complexities of environmental, legal, institutional and political issues which beset our world.” Alice Palmer, former Director of FIELD said: “FIELD brings a worldwide reputation for expertise in international environmental law to IIED’s widely recognised work in promoting sustainable patterns of development from local to global levels. Our strong organisational profiles in international environment and development debates, and similar goals and missions, make our organisations ‘natural partners’ ".
