Theme: Capacity Strengthening Project Name: Workshops to Strengthen the Capacity of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to Negotiate and Implement the UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol Dates: Annual workshops: November 2003, December 2004, ongoing Project partners: IIED and the Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development (FIELD). Introduction: Climate change is one of the most important sustainable development issues facing LDCs. Full and effective participation in the international climate change negotiations, effective implementation of the results of these negotiations, and feeding implementation experiences back into the negotiations have become increasingly important. In 2003 and 2004, IIED and FIELD ran a two-day workshop before the 9 th and 10 th Conference of the Parties (COP9 and COP10) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The workshops trained LDC delegates in negotiation strategies and facilitated discussion and understanding of substantive issues and the development and co-ordination of LDC positions on those issues prior to each COP. They also helped build a network of individuals who could continue to share ideas, knowledge and strategies. This will improve the intra-session coordination of positions and the potential preparation of submissions on behalf of the LDC group.
