Development and Adaptation Days at COP12

Development and Adaptation Days has become an anticipated part of each Conference of the Parties - an opportunity for the international climate change and development communities to share new approaches, explore common concerns and further adaptation efforts in developing countries. IIED, the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), and the Stockholm Environment Institute, together with the Regional and International Networking Group (RING), continued this tradition at COP12 in Nairobi, Kenya, on 11 and 12 November 2006. The popularity of the event continues to grow, and this year it was attended by over 400 people. For event highlights please see the Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB) photos and reports

Development and Adaptation Days Bulletin - Earth Negotiations Bulletin Team, IISD (Dec. 2004)

The “Development and Adaptation Days at COP-10” event took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 11-12 December 2004. The event was organized by IIED in collaboration with the Regional and International Networking Group (RING). The event was convened to raise the profile of adaptation and its linkages with development concerns, with a particular focus on the effects of climate change on the world’s poor - the group that will be most affected by the impacts of climate change. The event featured more than 40 speakers on these issues, as well as extended discussions and question-and-answer sessions. Over 100 people attended the two-day meeting. The event, which is the third of its kind to be held so far, attracted negotiators, academics, journalists, and representatives of the UN, intergovernmental organizations and civil society. The report of the event was compiled by the Earth Negotiations Bulletin Team at IISD. For additional coverage and photos, please see the IISD website.

Climate Change, Adaptive Capacity And Development

Edited by Joel B Smith (Stratus Consulting Inc, USA), Richard J T Klein (Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Germany) & Saleemul Huq (International Institute for Environment and Development, UK).

* This book is available for order through the World Scientific Bookshop site. Please click on the ordering information below.

The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Stratus Consulting organized a workshop in the fall of 2001 to develop an agenda for research on how best to enhance the capacity of developing countries to adapt to climate change. This research agenda is relevant for governments and institutions that wish to support developing countries in adapting to climate change. The workshop brought together experts from developing and industrialized countries, non-governmental organizations, and multilateral and bilateral donor organizations to discuss a number of important topics related to adaptation, adaptive capacity and sustainable development. A dozen papers were commissioned to cover these topics, both from a theoretical perspective and in the form of national case studies. The papers form the basis for this important book, which presents the latest interdisciplinary knowledge about the nature and components of adaptive capacity and how it may be strengthened.

Lessons Learned from Adapting to Climate Change in Bangladesh
Saleemul Huq, October 2002, 16pp, Washington DC

This report was prepared by Dr Saleemul Huq of IIED for the World Bank as part of its programme to mainstream climate change adaptation into its operational work. Bangladesh serves as an example for other countries of the world in this respect. The report looks at five key sectors of the economy and physical resources of the country, which are vulnerable to climate change, namely coastal resources, fresh water resources, agriculture, human health, and ecosystems and biodiversity.
